Atka Natas, a secretive operative hailing from the rigid regime of Liquidatzia, pays a visit to his estranged wife Vera, who is a chemist deeply involved with a band of exiles determined to smuggle their oppressed countrymen out of Liquidatzia. Almkvist, a principled local police officer and once Veras lover, reaches out to her while looking into the suspicious death of one of the refugees. Natas possesses a valuable roster of undercover agents working within the foreign land and is eager to sell this information to the Americans. However, tensions flare when Vera confronts Natas about rescuing her parents from Liquidatzia, leading to a violent altercation between the former partners.
