On a sweltering summer afternoon in New York City, Emma Jones engages in gossip with fellow residents of her apartment building about the scandalous affair between Mrs. Anna Maurrant and the milkman, Steve Sankey. When the brusque and aloof Mr. Frank Maurrant appears, the conversation quickly shifts. Meanwhile, their teenage daughter, Rose Maurrant, faces unwanted advances from her married boss, Mr. Bert Easter, but finds solace in the kindhearted Sam, a young Jewish neighbor who harbors feelings for her.The following morning, Frank Maurrant claims he is traveling to Stamford for business. While hes away, Mrs. Maurrant invites the amiable Sankey into their apartment, but the unexpected return of Frank leads to a violent confrontation. Gunshots ring out as Frank discovers his wife with Sankey, resulting in a deadly altercation where Frank kills Sankey and mortally wounds his wife.Frank is apprehended by the authorities and taken into custody, leaving his daughter Rose to fend for herself and her younger brother without parental support. Roses boss offers to help her secure her own apartment, but she declines. Instead, she encounters Sam and expresses her desire to leave the city. Sam pleads to accompany her, but Rose insists they need time apart before considering a future together. With a heavy heart, Rose walks away down the street, contemplating her uncertain future.
