In a small French town, Lucienne Delamare and Pierre Maury are engaged in a clandestine love affair. Lucienne, the wife of the towns mayor and French deputy, Paul, finds no passion in her marriage, as Paul is often absent on business trips to Paris. Pierre, now the vice-mayor thanks to Pauls support, is married to Clotilde, a frail and sickly woman.The two lovers meet in secret by a serene lake along a quiet country lane, escaping the prying eyes of the town. Clotildes sudden, mysterious death, believed by gossiping townspeople to be a suicide, reveals a dark secret. Pierre confides in Lucienne, revealing the truth behind his wifes demise.As the towns political tensions rise, Paul approaches Pierre with a dubious land deal that promises to benefit the town financially. In exchange for his support and collaboration, Paul seeks Pierres political backing. However, the web of lies and deceit begins to unravel when Paul stumbles upon evidence of his wifes infidelity.
