John Kent, a former star football player at Harvard, travels to Paris with his friend Huck Haines and his band, the Wabash Indianians. They face disappointment when their booking with Alexander Voyda falls through due to a misunderstanding about the bands origins. Seeking help, John turns to his Aunt Minnie, who owns the prestigious Roberta gown shop in Paris. There, he meets Stephanie, the head designer and chief assistant, and immediately becomes enamored with her.Meanwhile, Huck unexpectedly reunites with his hometown sweetheart, Lizzie Gatz, who is now Countess Scharwenka, a glamorous customer at Robertas. Lizzie helps secure a performance for Hucks band at the nightclub where she performs. John is troubled by the presence of Ladislaw, a dashing Russian prince and doorman who shows interest in Stephanie, as well as unresolved feelings for his former girlfriend Sophie.Tragedy strikes when Aunt Minnie passes away without a will, leaving the shop to John. Despite his lack of knowledge about womens fashion, John convinces Stephanie to stay on as his partner. As the shop gains attention, Huck takes on the role of spokesperson, leading to comical misunderstandings about upcoming fashion innovations.When Sophie arrives in Paris, tensions rise as John and Stephanie disagree over a gown she purchases. Stephanie resigns from the shop, but returns to save the day when Hucks designs for a fashion show go awry. The show is a success, with Stephanie modeling the highlight gown.Amidst the chaos, John mistakenly believes Stephanie has married Ladislaw and congratulates her on becoming a princess. However, their love is reignited when Stephanie reveals the truth about her relationship with Ladislaw. Meanwhile, Huck and Lizzie decide to marry and perform a memorable tap dance together.
