Duncan Mac MacLain, a private detective in New York, is blind but has honed his other senses to solve cases with the help of his guide dog Friday, butler Alistair, and assistant Marty. Norma Lawry seeks Macs advice when her step-daughter Barbara becomes infatuated with the much older Paul Gerente, who is also Normas ex-lover. Paul manipulates Barbara into believing that Norma wants him for herself and is only with her father for his money. Norma confronts Paul but he dismisses her, leading to a fatal confrontation at Pauls apartment where he is found dead. Barbara accuses Norma of the murder, threatening to expose her unless she leaves her father Stephen, who is unaware of the events unfolding at home as he leaves for a secret government mission.With the help of Friday and Marty, Mac investigates Pauls murder and uncovers a tangled web of espionage involving Normas butler Hansen and a spy ring led by Cheli Scott. Mac, pretending to be Normas eccentric uncle, infiltrates the household to gather evidence. As tensions rise and secrets are revealed, Vera, Gabriels wife and the Lawrys maid, is killed by Hansen, and Mac finds himself locked up by Cheli.Using his blindness to his advantage, Mac outsmarts his captors, overpowering them with the help of Friday and Marty. As the situation escalates, Stephen returns home, forced to confront the dangerous situation his family is embroiled in. With the help of the police, the spy ring is dismantled, and Stephen and Norma head to Washington, D.C., leaving Barbara in the care of her newfound protector, Uncle Mac.
