The fifth season of Murdoch Mysteries begins with Detective William Murdoch (Yannick Bisson) leaving Toronto to venture into the Klondike Gold Rush in the Yukon. Suspended for interfering in a case and feeling guilty for freeing a murderer, Murdoch is also dealing with a broken heart after Dr. Ogdens (Hélène Joy) marriage to another man. In the city, newly promoted Chief Constable Giles (Nigel Bennett) closely monitors Inspector Thomas Brackenreid (Thomas Craig) and the police force. Meanwhile, Dr. Ogden now works with Detective George Crabtree (Jonny Harris) and Dr. Emily Grace (Georgina Reilly), forming a new investigative team.In the Yukon, Murdoch attempts to start anew with prospecting, hoping for success after his personal struggles. However, when he becomes involved in the case of Mrs. Elizabeth Bryant (Jill Halfpenny), an innkeeper accused of murder, Murdoch finds himself once again drawn into the world of detective work. With the help of writer Jack London (Aaron Ashmore), Murdoch realizes that he cannot escape his past and his passion for solving mysteries, even in the remote north. As he unravels the case, Murdoch must confront his feelings for Dr. Ogden and navigate the challenges of rebuilding his life while continuing his detective work.
